The beast from the east.

Beast for the eastThe beast from the east, or as it will be remembered in a few years, that snow we had one year. Now that it has passed, was it the apocalyptic event it was hyped up to be? Or was it a bit of snow that the UK was unprepared for as usual.

The rant begins….

I remember when I was a kid (i know that makes me sound older than i am), every street corner had a salt grit container and when the snow came, everyone in the street went out with a shovel and spread it on the road. With the major roads being gritted and the good old community spirit taking care of the side roads, you could get around just fine.

Personally, I enjoyed the snow immensely. This was the first time my 3yo son ever saw snow and seeing his face light up at the sight of this white stuff falling from the sky, is something that will stay with me forever. As he hits his teens, I will probably need to remind myself of these memories, in order to endure the inevitable years of ridiculous arguments that come with a teenager.

Playing in the snow has the instant ability to make me smile; even when the boy is throwing a tantrum, because I will not allow him to pick up the “treasure” he found under the snow, left behind by a dog. I was always warned about yellow snow, but not the dog poo treasure that hides underneath the snow. Needless to say I definitely don’t need that kind of treasure in the house.

The thing that surprised me the most while we were out playing in the snow with the neighbours and their kids, was the lack of other children in the streets. Most where just watching from their windows. I guess this is a sign that I’m getting old, as I remember being told to play outside and always begrudgingly went out to play, but once out always enjoyed it. No doubt I’ll be saying the same to my boy in years to come.

The Struggle is real

If you want rock hard pecs and abs like a washboard, then you need to move along now. This post is not going to help you. Because putting on weight when staying at home with a toddler is a battle of wills, as the exercise comes with the territory.

Get Control

The diet is the hardest thing to control as the ” one for you, one for me” idea, while great to teach how to share, it is not so great for the waistline as this gives you the perfect excuse for extra biscuit consumption.
Also, cooking a meal and giving your toddler a smaller portion inevitably means you end up with a extra large plate full. But to be honest, the art of cooking the correct amount of spaghetti is some kind of voodoo power, only blessed to TV chefs and Italians.
Luckily I have an advantage here, my boy eats anything that I put in front of him, with his favorite being raw vegetables and hummus (which works out nice for me as I love it to).

Get Moving

I already do my workout everyday without even knowing it. Yesterday was toddler Olympics for me, which included:
  • Baby wipe fishing – the art of fishing out baby wipes from the toilet, that the boy decided needed to be released from their imperial oppressors and cast into the river of freedom.
  • Toilet dash (with hurdles) – carrying a 3 stone toddler up the stairs as fast as you can while jumping over various toys left on the floor, including the dreaded “Lego of pain”, which if you have not had the pleasure of experiencing, is like a trap created by Satan himself.
  • Toddler weight lifting – playing with a toddler will always include lifting them up and down with no consideration for correct ‘lifting form’, as there is no correct way when your making your toddler fly like superman. This was never a struggle when the boy was a 2, but at 3 years old, this is now classed as a full kettlebell workout.

Don’t over eat

I’ve lost nearly 2 stone (12.7kg) in weight in a matter of weeks, by making a few simple changes to my diet:-
  1. Eat 3 times a day but nothing after 16:00. I was eating Porridge for breakfast and then a chicken or tuna salad wrap with some raw veg and hummus for the other  meals.
  2. Drink lots of water, you’d be surprised what a difference this can make to your food intake.
  3. No alcohol, well maybe a little as a treat.
  4. Portion control. Surprisingly, if you put in more calories than you use, you put on weight. So don’t eat 500g of Minced beef in one sitting just because you can.
Just remember to stop worrying about the weight. Small changes will have an effect, but it will take longer to see the results.

Keeping your sanity as a stay at home dad.

Deciding to become at stay-at-home Dad was not a decision I took lightly. After long discussions with my better half and going over the finances, we made the choice for me to stay at home and look after our son.

What could be easier than looking after your own child? You do it already, right?

 

WRONG!

Let me tell you. It’s not all kisses and cuddles. It can be so much more testing and until you experience it first-hand, don’t judge. Because if you do and the parent you are judging makes eye contact, you will become the target of the last 4 hours of built up rage made by a 2 1/2 year old screaming at them, because the socks he has been wearing all day are now the wrong ones and this epiphany came to him at the checkout in Lidl.

Or the joyous moment when they start using the word “NO”, as if it is the answer to every conceivable question. When the question is “would you like the orange or the blue cup”, the answer of “NO!” does not quite cut it.

Even with these outbursts on a regular basis, the ability for the little noise maker to say something adorable and totally wipe the rage and stress away with a well timed fart or a laugh, makes it all worth while.

You can never get this time back with your children and I’d rather have these experiences with him now, then regret missing out on it later in life.

So in light of this balancing act that a stay-at-home dad has to perform on a daily basis; I’ve created this blog to share my experiences and limited knowledge with you, in the hope that it will help you by knowing the day to day madness and feelings your experiencing are not targeting you alone.

The kids are out to get us all!

The 3 important things to remember to keep your sanity are:

  • It will wash out and it can be tidyed up. If not, get a bigger rug and cover it up .
  • Embrace the noise – it may never stop, but if it does, enjoy the silence. It will be brief. So you might as well embrace the noise and even join in.
  • If they are happy, you’re doing it right. And if they’re not, then you’re proberly still doing it right.
